Gratitude Journal no. 21
July 6, 2024
I am thankful for…
1. Democracy. As we approach a time in American history where it is being challenged, I reflect on the moments of my childhood where I realized my life was as good, if not better than that, as a queen’s life. Maybe that’s why we’re here? My little white girl life was amazing at a time when other fellow citizens were struggling. Now, it seems like we’re all struggling - emotions, health, finances, and even basics (like work and chores) are all heavy and harder than before. I used to think it was just part of getting older, but the more I talk to people who are even older than me, the more I think it’s something deeper. Our whole system is being challenged. I’m thankful my childhood was when it was not this way.
2. Holidays. It’s nice when several people I know collectively have a day to be together. As I age, my ability to think in months and years is improving… which makes me a grateful that I do have people who I only see twice or four times a year. It’s not a lot, but it’s meaningful overtime. I’m thankful to age with them.
3. Park Districts and libraries. Like holidays, these public facilities fill my memories, especially in the summer months. From summer camps, swimming pools, and movies in the park to reading programs and scavenger hunts, I’m grateful that I live in a city that invests in its public facilities. The park district and library employees I have met and worked with are thoughtful, kind, and passionate about the community and youth. I’m also always relieved to find a decent toilet when I’m out exploring. I’m thankful for my city’s public spaces.
If you’re new here
I decided to challenge myself to publish my personal writing more, starting January 2024. From pausing to deliberately reflect to getting more disciplined about creating for myself, I jumped into this goal. For a little more on this journey, check out my first public Gratitude Journal entry.
